About this tool

What PDF-to-Word conversion does, and when you need it

The PDF to Word tool takes a standard PDF and produces an editable .docx file from its text layer. It reads the document with PDF.js, walks through every page, and regroups the text fragments it finds into whole lines based on their vertical position on the page. Those lines become ordinary paragraphs in a Word document written at a readable 12-point size, with pages kept in their original order. The finished file downloads straight from your browser the moment conversion finishes.

The classic situation is having a document you can only get as a PDF: a resume you sent years ago, a form someone emailed you, project requirements locked inside a finalized report, or a clause from an agreement you want to lift into a new draft. Retyping all of that by hand is slow and error-prone, and copying text out of many PDF viewers mangles the line breaks. Converting to Word gives you a clean, editable draft you can revise, reorganize, and build on with the word processor you already know.

This converter is built for text-based PDFs, meaning files that contain a real text layer rather than photographs of paper. Scanned documents carry no text layer to extract, so they yield little or no usable content until they have been run through OCR first. The output favors clean, editable text over pixel-perfect design: complex multi-column layouts, table grids, images, and the original fonts do not carry over. Like every tool on this site, the entire conversion runs locally in your browser, and the file never leaves your device.

How to convert a PDF to Word, step by step

Turning a text-based PDF into an editable DOCX takes under a minute. Here is exactly what you will see and do.

  1. 1

Open the PDF to Word tool

Open pdf.rupix.io/pdf-to-word in any modern browser. The upload panel loads right on the page, and nothing is transmitted while you browse or pick a file. Once the page has loaded, you can work even on a slow connection.

  2. 2

    Select your PDF file

Click the Select Files button and choose a .pdf from your computer, or drag the file straight onto the panel. Files up to 100 MB are accepted. Choose a document made from digital text rather than a scan, so the converter has a text layer to work with.

  3. 3

    Check the selected file card

Once loaded, the document appears in a card showing its name and size. If you picked the wrong file, press the X on the card to remove it and choose another. Two short panels below explain how the text reconstruction works and which apps open the result.

  4. 4

    Click Convert to Word

Press the Convert to Word button at the bottom of the card. The button switches to a Converting state while each page is read and the DOCX is assembled. Larger documents naturally take a few seconds longer than short ones.

  5. 5

    Save the DOCX file

When the success screen appears, the download has already started, named after the original PDF with a .docx extension. If it did not save automatically, use the download button on the success screen. You can also start over with a different document from the same screen.

  6. 6

    Open and edit the result

Open the DOCX in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice and you will find each page as a series of editable paragraphs. Expect clean text rather than a replica of the original design, so give columns or tables a quick pass to tidy the flow. From here you can revise freely and export a fresh PDF whenever you need one.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I edit the converted Word document in Google Docs?

Yes, the exported .docx file is 100% compliant with the standard OpenXML specification used by Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Apple Pages, and LibreOffice.

Is confidential text in my PDF protected?

Yes. All text parsing and DOCX packaging is performed client-side in your browser. Nothing is sent to any remote server.

Does it work on scanned PDFs without text layers?

This tool extracts native digital text layers. For pure scanned image documents, ensure the document has OCR or embedded text.

Are tables and lists preserved in the DOCX output?

Yes, the parser detects list items and paragraph blocks to reconstruct standard Word formatting structures.

Why did my headings, colors, and images disappear in the Word file?

This converter reconstructs content, not visual styling. It reads the PDF's text layer and rebuilds it as plain 12-point paragraphs, so fonts, colors, images, and table grids are left behind in favor of a clean, editable draft. If preserving the exact look of the page matters, edit the original source document instead, and treat the converted file as a working text copy.

My PDF is a scan. Why is the converted Word file empty or missing text?

Scanners and some phone apps produce a picture of each page with no selectable text underneath, and this tool extracts text rather than performing OCR. Run the scanned file through an OCR program first so it gains a real text layer, then convert it here. Documents born digital, such as exports from Word or web printouts, convert normally.

How does a two-column PDF come out in Word?

Lines are assembled in order of their vertical position on each page, which works perfectly for single-column documents. In a two-column newsletter or academic paper, both columns occupy similar heights, so their lines can interleave in the output. All the text is still there, but plan on reordering blocks by hand, or split each column onto its own page before converting.

Is there a limit on how many pages or how large the PDF can be?

There is no page-count limit. The upload panel accepts files up to 100 MB, and conversion happens in your browser's memory, so very large documents are bounded by your device's available RAM rather than by our servers. Keep the browser tab open until the success screen appears, because closing it mid-conversion cancels the job.
