Does shrinking pages make the text unreadable?

Body-text documents remain comfortable at two-up, tolerate four-up for many readers, and get squinty beyond that, while slide decks and large-type pages hold up well even at nine-up.
In what order are pages arranged on each sheet?
Pages flow in normal reading order: left to right along each row, then onward down the sheet, with page one always in the top-left cell. A twenty-page document printed four-up therefore fills five sheets, with pages 1 through 4 on the first sheet and pages 17 through 20 on the last.
Why did my landscape pages come out smaller than expected?
Every page is scaled to fit inside a portrait-shaped cell while preserving its aspect ratio, so wide landscape pages end up letterboxed with space above and below and shrink more aggressively than portrait pages would. For better results, rotate landscape pages upright first or choose a wider layout such as two-up, whose broad cells flatter landscape material.
