What adding page numbers does for a PDF — and who needs it
The Add Page Numbers tool stamps a clear Page X of Y label onto every page of your PDF. You control where the number sits, choosing between the top and bottom of the page, and how it lines up horizontally with left, center, or right alignment. You also set the number that appears on the first page and tune the font size. Once applied, the numbers are part of the document itself rather than something your PDF viewer improvises on screen.
Numbering matters most the moment a PDF leaves your hands. Court filings, government applications, business reports, and academic submissions frequently require stable page references, and a merged or scanned PDF often arrives with none at all. Adding numbers lets a reviewer say turn to page 14 and know everyone sees the same thing. It is equally useful for board packets, training manuals, and any long contract that people will discuss over the phone.
Everything happens inside your browser using the pdf-lib library, so the file is read from disk, numbered in memory, and written back without ever touching a server. The numbers are drawn as real vector text in a neutral gray Helvetica, which keeps them legible but unobtrusive against your content. Because there is no upload step, even confidential legal or financial documents stay on your machine from start to finish.
How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF
Insert customizable header or footer page numbers into your PDF.
- 1
Upload PDF File
Select or drag and drop your PDF document into the page number editor.
- 2
Customize Numbering Style & Position
Select page number format ('Page {n} of {total}', '{n}', etc.), font size, margin, and position (Bottom Right, Bottom Center, Top Right, etc.).
- 3
Generate and Download
Click 'Add Page Numbers' to render numbering directly onto each page and download your numbered PDF.
How to add page numbers to a PDF, step by step
The whole process takes under a minute: load the file, pick a spot for the numbers, and download the finished PDF.
- 1
Open the Add Page Numbers tool
Open the Page Numbers page in your browser and drop your PDF into the upload area, or click it to browse your computer. The tool accepts any standard PDF, and your file is loaded locally without being sent anywhere.
- 2
Choose the position
Use the Position toggle to place the number at the top or bottom of the page. Bottom is the conventional choice and matches most books and reports, while top works well when a document already has a busy footer.
- 3
Pick an alignment
Select left, center, or right alignment for the horizontal placement. Centered numbers suit formal reports, right-aligned numbers are common in legal documents, and left alignment leaves room for anything sitting at the right edge.
- 4
Set the starting number
Enter the number that should appear on the first page in the Start At field. If your PDF is a continuation, for example the second half of a report, you can begin at any value and the page-of-total count adjusts to stay consistent.
- 5
Adjust the font size
Type a font size between 6 and 24 points in the Font Size box. Twelve points is the default and suits most documents; go slightly larger for dense legal exhibits that get photocopied, or smaller if you want the numbering barely noticeable.
- 6
Check the live preview
Watch the sample page on the right as you change settings. It mirrors your position, alignment, and size choices instantly, so you can settle on a layout without processing the file repeatedly.
- 7
Add the numbers and download
Click Add Page Numbers and wait a moment while each page is stamped. Your numbered PDF downloads automatically as Numbered followed by the original file name, and the success screen offers the download again in case you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I exclude the first page (cover page) from numbering?
Yes, you can set the 'Start numbering from page' option to skip cover pages and start numbering on page 2 or any desired page.
Can I use 'Page X of Y' format?
Yes, Rupix supports both single number formats and dynamic total page count formats like 'Page 1 of 24'.
Are original document contents obscured?
Page numbers are drawn into the header/footer margin area specified by your margin offset, keeping main document text clear.
Can I customize the numbering font and color?
Yes, you can select custom font sizing, font family styles, and color codes for page numbers.
What format do the page numbers use?
Every page is stamped in a Page X of Y pattern, such as Page 4 of 22, which many courts and institutions prefer because it shows both the current position and the overall length. The Start At field controls the number printed on the first page, and the running total adjusts so the sequence stays consistent through the last page.
Can I leave the cover page unnumbered?
The tool stamps every page in the document, including the first one, so there is no built-in cover exemption. A practical workaround is to split the cover off or delete it first, number the remaining pages, and reassemble the file afterward. Alternatively, set Start At so the cover reads as page zero, or simply accept the label on the cover.
Will the numbers print sharply?
Yes. The numbers are added as vector text using an embedded standard Helvetica font, not as a screenshot or bitmap, so they stay perfectly crisp on screen and at any print resolution. They are drawn in a muted gray that reads clearly without competing with your document's body text, and they hold up well to photocopying and scanning.
Why is my page number overlapping existing content?
Some PDFs already carry their own headers or footers that sit close to the page edges. Switch the position from bottom to top, or vice versa, to land the new number in free space, or choose a different alignment so it settles beside rather than on top of the old text. Dropping the font size a little also helps in tight layouts.
