What PDF cropping trims — and what it deliberately leaves alone
Cropping shrinks the visible area of your pages by trimming margins from each edge. This version keeps it simple: four sliders control how much of the page disappears from the top, bottom, left, and right, expressed as a percentage up to 40 percent per edge. As you drag them, a live preview of the first page shows exactly what remains inside the frame. The everyday use is fixing scans. Scanners love to add white borders, capture the shadowed edge of the scanner lid, or include the black backing from thin sheets, and every following page inherits that wasted frame. Cropping also tightens documents for screens — removing generous print-era margins makes text larger and more readable on tablets and e-readers without zooming — and evens out inconsistent edges before you share slides, handouts, or recipes.
One thing cropping does not do is delete anything. It sets the standard crop box that tells PDF viewers which region to display, so content outside the frame is hidden from view but still exists inside the file — which is why cropped files are barely smaller than the originals. Treat it as re-framing for presentation, not redaction: if a page contains something that must truly be gone, remove that whole page instead. How to crop a PDF, step by step

Read the live preview
The panel shows two layers: the dimmed full page underneath, and the bright framed region that stays after cropping. The bright area updates instantly as you move any slider, so treat it as your source of truth while adjusting.

Trim the top and bottom
Drag the Top slider rightward to cut away header whitespace, then Bottom for footer space. Each edge accepts up to 40 percent of the page's height, with the exact percentage displayed next to its label as you go.

Trim the left and right
Do the same with the Left and Right sliders to remove scanner borders or binding shadows along the sides. Watch the preview as each value changes — the goal is to stop at the point where actual content begins.

Check the crop against the whole document
Remember this crop applies uniformly to every page, not just the one previewed. If later pages hold footers, page numbers, or charts closer to the edges than page one, keep some slack in your margins so nothing important gets hidden there.

What do the percentage values on the sliders actually mean?
Each slider trims that share of the page's dimension away from its edge: Top 10 percent removes the top tenth of the page's height, Left 15 percent removes the leftmost fifteenth of its width. Edges work independently, defaults sit at 10 percent per side, and each slider stops at 40 percent so the page can never be cropped into oblivion from one direction alone.
Can I crop different amounts on different pages?
Not currently — the tool applies one margin setting to the entire document by design, which suits scanned files where every page shares the same border problem. For mixed needs, split the document first, crop each part with its own settings, then merge the pieces back together. That route takes a couple of extra steps but gives you precise per-section control.
Does cropping make the file smaller or remove hidden content?
No on both counts. Cropping adjusts the viewing frame, so text and images outside it are merely hidden while remaining stored in the file — meaning file size stays essentially unchanged and off-crop text may still be selectable. To genuinely reduce size, run the result through Compress PDF afterward. To truly eliminate content, Delete Pages removes entire pages rather than hiding regions of them.
Why did content get cut off on pages other than the first?
The preview shows page one, but the crop lands on every page identically — pages whose layout differs, such as ones with wide tables or bottom-heavy footers, can lose edge content even when page one looked perfect. Reopen your original, pull the sliders back toward zero, and reapply with tighter margins until the most edge-hungry page in the document fits comfortably.
